Do you have Knob and Tube Wiring?

This is a picture of my attic prior to replacing the knob and tube in my house. This picture shows porcelain knobs attached by a nail to the joists. The knobs are supporting electrical wiring that were installed in 1955 when the house was built. The previous owners had insulation blown into the attic...a big no-no since the heat from the deteriorating electrical wires could have ignited a fire. One of the first things after we bought the house was to replace the knob and tube with Romex wiring and replaced the light fixtures, light switches, and electrical receptacles.

Knob and Tube replacement is popular now because insurance companies are not offering homeowner policies on homes with knob and tube wiring. Instead, they are denying coverage or requiring homeowners to complete the knob and tube replacement within 30 days of binding coverage.

Specifically in San Francisco, it is required to remove the old knob and tube wiring, not just abandon it to pass inspection.

Knob and Tube replacement was commonly done when homeowners wanted to install insulation. Today the driving force is insurance coverage.

The process involves getting permits, rewiring the house which requires drilling holes through studs and joists, and installing all new fixtures.
